Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month is quickly approaching. I love using this month to focus on biographies in my classroom because we learn about so many amazing people during this time. I have a couple of resources in my TpT store that can help you get ready for this exciting month.

My first resource is my African American History Month Biography Project.
Students will practice their research skills, and learn important history while completing this project. While doing this project, students will read a biography, take notes using the Biography Notes Sheet, complete a character sketch using the Social Networking Profile Page, complete the Interesting Facts Diagram, and write a magazine article summarizing their person's life and accomplishments. This project can be done in class or at home.

The other items I have are biography related but can be integrated into any Black History Month Unit.

As you have read before, I love using menus or choice boards in my classroom. We use them in all subject areas. I like using menus because they give students a choice to demonstrate what they have learned, and I feel that students need that freedom. I like using reading skill menus as a center during my guided reading time. In February, I plan on using my Biography Menu to help reinforce those biography skills.

The last item I have is my Biography Trading Card Project.

This is a quick project that can be done in school or at home. During this project, students will create trading cards about famous people throughout history and learn about biographies. This project pack includes; a Biography Trading Card Recording Sheet for students to record their research, a Trading Card Template (Front and Back)and teacher friendly directions.  This is a great project to use during Black History Month, or while studying different time periods in history. It’s a great way for students to learn about important people in history and practice their biography skills!

I hope these resources help you prepare for the month ahead!
